Westjet Seat Assignment

Seat Selection Fees - Worth it?

Seat Selection Fees - Worth it?

I probably know the answer to this, "no", but I thought I'd ask since I don't fly WS that often.

I am flying to Cuba for an AI vacation (YYZ-VRA). I have not paid for seat selection ($40 per person both ways = $80 total). I am usually good for OLCI at h-24, but I was told that OLCI doesn't work when departing Cuba.

Is it worth $80? Or is it possible to select seats ONLY on the return leg? I generally don't think it is, but I don't know how busy the flight will be, since AC doesn't fly that day, and WG & TS have crappy flight times.

You can't pre-book Plus unless you are on a Plus fare, but you can buy at check in. I generally will pre-pay for exit row seats as they're worth it. Otherwise, the seats are pretty much all the same (other than Plus) and in my view aren't worth the cost. There is a risk of not getting your choice of aisle/middle/window, of course.

I agree with the above. It's only worth it to book an exit row in advance OR if you really like sitting in a specific seat. I find WS is good for keeping families/groups together.

You can always call and ask to book your seats only for the return now.

I find the exit row seats have less padding. Anyone else?

On such a short flight I wouldn't pay for seat assignment but that's just MHO. I only consider it when the flight is at least 4.5 hours or longer,

I have only had two WestJet flights where there were no acceptable seats available at T minus 23:59 or even much closer to the departure. I also have gone to the airport the night before to check-in when online check-in failed me.

As Error 601 has eluded to, it can on occasion be difficult getting seats together on some very full flights. The trend for seat selection is definitely higher on flights to sun/ vacation destinations than domestic/ business cities.

When I was in customer service at the airport, I remember one flight to Hawaii where all but six seats were pre-reserved.

Cheers,
Darren

Back in 2013 I had some Westjet connecting flights that I booked through Air France for a family trip. I was able to select my Air France seats when I booked the tickets, but I was worried about sitting apart from my kids on the shorter Westjet legs. I didn't want special seats like the exit row, I just wanted to sit as a family. I called up the Westjet call centre and the friendly CSR quickly waived the seat selection fee for my 5 tickets each way. I was very impressed with their customer service. Actually all dealing with the Westjet call centre have been surprisingly positive experiences.

If I've bought exit-row seats, do I have the option to switch to Plus at OLCI, or do I still have to pay?

I thought I'd bump this thread to comment that thanks to a sale I booked a RT YEG-LGA for CAD$475 all in but balked at assigning seats in advance as the regular seat fee is 60 bucks roundtrip or roughly 12% of the ticket & tax cost which is too high for me. Exit rows are double the price at $120 roundtrip which to me isn't worth it so will wait until OLCI.

Just MHO and YMMV.
